Today is Independent Bookstore Day. From the American Booksellers Association “This national one-day party held the last Saturday in April celebrates independent bookstores across the country online and in-store. Through exclusive books and literary items, contests, cupcakes, and everything in between, it’s a party you don’t want to miss!”
For more information and some history, check out this article from USA Today.
I’m encouraging everyone (self-included) to visit at least one (or two or more) independent bookstores and to buy a book (or two or more). Here are three of my favorite local indie bookstores with links to their websites:
Marcus Books 3900 Martin L King Jr Way, OAKLAND, CA 94609-2316 (510) 652-2344
Pegasus Books Downtown Berkeley 2349 Shattuck Avenue 510-649-1320
Mrs. Dalloway’s 2904 College Avenue, Berkeley, CA 94705, (510)704-8222
I encourage you to get out and enjoy the celebration and community at your local indie bookstore. However, if you’re unable to physically visit your local independent bookstore, or you don’t happen to be in the vicinity of one, purchase a book virtually through the nearest store’s website. I’ve provided links for the three stores I listed above. You can also visit Bookshop.org and choose an independent bookstore to support with your purchase.
