I’ve been rummaging through boxes of files and things and I came across this handwritten recipe for the pie of late fall and winter holidays that mom sent to me. I must have asked for it because I found a sticky on the back with the words “Joyce, Here is the recipe. Love U, Mom.” I don’t remember when I made the request, or whether I made the pie that year, but I am so glad I found part of this interchange between us. I’ve been finding other things and they are buoying me and providing the balance I need as I continue to write about my life and the parts of it I once shared with mom.
